What would you do when you find out that you're family is dead? If your only purpose of working in a harsh condition was to help your family? That you have nobody else to trust now? Bella from Uprising is an Italian girl who came to America with Pietro, her far relative, to save her family. Pietro was the only person she trusted but now Pietro is gone and she finds out that her family is dead. She has no purpose of living but decides to live and work for herself. She is a worker at a shirtwaist factory, where she has no rights. When Bella is having a hard time, she finds out that there is a union of strikers who wants rights for every girl whether or not they're working in a shirtwaist factory. Bella decides to strike with other girls for their rights. I would've done the same, to show that even girls working in factories are people.
Bella could've made the decision to go back to her village, to work in the shirt waist factory, to get another job. But she made the decision to sacrifice herself in the cold picket line for every girl in the factory's right. When she stands in the cold air with her stomach grumbling, she has tears in her eyes. But she thinks back of how Signor Carlotti had always cheated her, when she hadn’t got her pay for being a minute late, when he set the clock back so she worked for ages, when she got ripped off for electricity, needles, threads, when she got charged for ripped shirtwaists when he ripped them himself. When she thinks of those, she wipes away her tears and strike. Bella is sacrificing her own life for other girl’s rights.
If I were Bella, I would’ve made the same decision. Bella decides to sacrifice herself. I would know that my life is half over without my family and Pietro. I would strike even harder, earn the right of girls at shirt waist factories and work even harder to pay the debt. Bella would’ve done the same, she is a nice, hardworking, brave girl who doesn’t only think about herself.
